Being my first post, I'd just like to say Hi! before I begin. Well, here is my review of the AIM Real Steel 3-9x40 Scope. This is a hunting scope I bought on www.evike.com, so it's pretty comprehensive.
First Impression
Upon opening up the box, which by the way, has pictures of hunting (deer, pretty sad for me as I don't hunt animals), I noticed it is completely steel/metal. It came with:
1. The 3-9x40 Scope
2. Scope lense covers
3. Picatinny mounts
That is a basic scope package right there. It is one foot long (technically 12.2 inches), and has the Minutes of Angle (MOA) tick marks, 4 on each side of the crosshair.
Technical
As stated before, 4 tick marks on each side of the reticle, they are pretty close together as well. Probably 1 or 2 mm.
If you don't know what the numbers for scopes are (3-9x40) they mean: 3-9 is the magnification. In this case it is adjustable. 40 is the length, in millimeters, of the outer lense. Bigger lenses provide slightly wider optical fields.
The 3-9 magnification is kind of overkill, in that I have heard that you only need about 2-4. Even so, I can see how 5~7 may come in handy if shooting beyond 120 feet. Remember, if you look through the scope at something less than about 10 feet away, the reticle will fade and blur out.
Moving on. If you want to play around with moving the reticle lines (which you shouldn't until you zero the scope) you need a quarter or a screwdriver to adjust it.
Miscellanious
To compliment the scope - as all of you will do, I know - wrap it up in some kind of camouflage. Like a gun hillie or FormWrap (what I did). It also helps because, even though it is matte black, it can shine a little bit. Another thing: The scope lense covers are yellow and White so cover them up unless you want to be shot.
Here's the reticle, 1st Person view.
Looking beside the scope. Note my ACU FormWrap. I know, ACU, the surplus store didn't have the 1/16 netting I like.
The magnification dial on the scope. This case it is 3, but again, can go up to 9.
And, the scope itself.
